Embracing the Power of the Wind

18 July 2013

In a letter published in the Bournemouth Echo on Monday 15th July, Mark Chivers, of the Climate Reality Project, has responded to a letter attacking Friends of the Earth’s decision to support the Navitus Bay Wind Park development.

Mark has written to point out that the previous correspondent, like so many, fails on all counts.

“There are few ‘cheaper or more reliable’ options if we take into account our need to dramatically reduce carbon emissions.

“Globally, government 'subsidies' for fossil fuels surpass those for renewables, and the Department of Energy and Climate Change expects bills to ultimately be brought down by their current policies.

“No ‘harm to bird or marine life’ is expected (the RSPB have no objections and many wind farms become havens for marine life) and I have yet to see any ‘other countries’ who are questioning wind power – the vast majority – including China and the USA are dramatically surpassing previous expectations for growth in this field.

“Has he considered why people, like those in Friends of the Earth, who have dedicated many hours campaigning vigorously to protect our natural environment are prepared to compromise on this development?”
