BBC - 'Stop Media Blackout of The Green Party'

2 June 2014

An online petition has been started with the aim of forcing the BBC to give the Green Party adequate and fair coverage relative to their recent electoral success.

Started by Portia Cocks (@PortiaCocks), a member of Young Greens, the petition reads

We feel the BBC News coverage of the European and Local Elections has, to date, been unfairly biased against the Green Party. This bias is not only evident in the almost complete absence of coverage of the Green Party during the European and, specifically, Local Election results, but also prior to this during the campaign for the elections on Thursday 22 May.

Whilst we understand that UKIP made gains in the Local Elections, it has gone largely unreported that the Green Party currently have a total of 162 Councillors and are now the official opposition in Liverpool, Solihull, Islington, Lewisham, and Norwich (15 councillors to Labour's 21). They gained 2 seats in Bristol, 1 with over 47% of the vote and retained a third seat, bringing the total to 6.

The petition, hosted on the 38 Degrees 'Campaigns by You' site, goes on to point out that, as the Greens finished the Euro elections ahead of the Lib Dems, they should be treated as a major party, especially as UKIP get that treatment despite not having an MP. Since January 2014, Question Time has featured 5 UKIP representatives but only 1 Green.
