We Are Bournemouth

23 August 2014

A march and rally was held in Bournemouth on Saturday 23rd August as a Celebration of Diversity.  This was planned to coincide with an event involving the fascist organisation, the English Defence League (EDL), who marched through the centre of Bournemouth. This was a Bank Holiday weekend when the town centre was busy with visitors and local residents enjoying a summer break.

Fascism and racism are a threat to our society and we believe that it is vital that local residents make a stand against such divisive and dangerous groups.

The counter-demonstration was co-ordinated by Unite the Union. South East Dorset Green Party supported this rally, and met with hundreds of others to take a different route through the town in a colourful and good-natured procession.  Our secretary, Helen, was invited to be one of the speakers representing some of the many organisations involved, which included political parties, faith groups and unions.

Thanks to members and supporters who came along, to Steve Attwill of Unite the Union for putting everything together at short notice, and to the many police who kept order on the day.
