A People's Assembly on Climate & Ecological Emergency - 28th August

26 August 2019

Last month Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole (BCP) Council declared a Climate & Ecological Emergency.

In passing the motion BCP Council pledged to make itself and its operations carbon neutral by 2030, and to work with the wider community to look at how early the conurbation can be made carbon neutral, ahead of the UK target of 2050.

South East Dorset Green Party invites you to a people's assembly, open to all, dedicated to discussion of the Climate & Ecological Emergency in BCP and what we as concerned members of the local community can contribute.

Wednesday 28th August, 7.00pm-9.00pm
Moordown Community Centre,
Coronation Avenue, Bournemouth, BH9 1TB

You set the agenda for this assembly during its opening, and then you decide which discussions to participate in. After a short introduction with Councillor Chris Rigby*, we will use the "open space" method to break into smaller groups:

  • You can propose any question/topic for discussion, if you feel able to host that discussion in a breakout group.
  • You can also request a particular discussion topic with someone else hosting - if someone else steps up, that discussion can proceed.
  • We will use post-it notes on the wall to arrange the discussions offered into an 'agenda'.
  • We then split up and "The Law of Two Feet" applies: you use your own two feet to move to whatever discussion you can best contribute to and/or learn from, taking responsibility for what you care about.
  • There will be two rounds of sessions with a short comfort break in the middle.
  • We will come back together for the last ~20 minutes to share flipchart notes from all the discussions.
  • Flipchart notes will be compiled into a written record of the gathering, for sharing.

Councillor Chris Rigby says: "This is an emergency and we need to act now to make change, what should BCP council be doing? What should businesses be doing and what can you do?

"Join in this open space event and meet like minded people, contribute ideas and see how we can change our future.

"This event will be facilitated using techniques encouraging active listening, and mutual respect to ensure that everyone gets the opportunity to be heard and contribute."
