Four Green MPs elected - with Green advances across Bournemouth and Poole

Everyone in the Green Party movement is today celebrating the largest advance in our 41-year history, as the number of Green MPs quadrupled to four. Across Bournemouth and Poole, there were also solid advances in the Green Party's vote shares.

Local residents can now report any suspected drugs-related activity to Dorset Police much more quickly and easily. Green Councillor for Queen's Park & Charminster Alasdair Keddie is a member of the Dorset Police & Crime Panel. He successfully led a strand of work by the Panel on crime reporting, which led to agreement for Dorset Police to set up a new “intelligence portal” webform.

Simon Bull has been re-elected to serve a second year as Vice-Chair of BCP Council. Meanwhile Chris Rigby has been re-elected as Chair of the Council’s Environment & Place Overview & Scrutiny Committee.

Cyril Park and alleyways cleared of litter and fly-tipping

As of April 2024, Cyril Park and nearby alleyways were completely clear of litter and fly-tipping. Hard-working Green councillor for Queen's Park & Charminster Alasdair Keddie has frequently liaised with the BCP Cleansing Team, working to fix these issues, and graffiti, across the Wessex Way area. He also picks litter himself daily after his school run – totalling at least 50 bags in the past year.

A sad farewell to King's Park Plant Nursery

After 100 years, King’s Park Plant Nursery has permanently closed. BCP Council decided to axe the facility as part of £41m of further cuts to balance its books. Councils across the country are in dire financial straits, following 14 years of swingeing cuts to council funding by the Conservative Government. Green Councillors Alasdair Keddie (Queen's Park & Charminster) and Sara Armstrong (East Cliff & Springbourne) visited the nursery at the end to personally thank the staff and volunteers - and collect some surplus plants and tree bark to distribute to community projects in the area.

Green campaign against closure succeeds: Moordown Plus Day Centre saved

Following a grassroots campaign supported and led by your Green ward councillors, Joe and Kate Salmon, BCP Council has abandoned its plan to close the much-loved Moordown Plus day centre. The centre provides a “gold standard” daytime facility for older people living with dementia, and is a lifeline for both service users and their carers.

Green Party councillors for Moordown Joe Salmon and Kate Salmon have worked with council officers to ensure that new play equipment is installed at Moordown Recreation Ground. Last year there was another arson attack (see photo inset) on new play equipment which had previously been left uninsured by BCP Council.

BCP Council budget of more swingeing cuts passed – without Green support

BCP Council has passed its budget for 2024/25, with further cuts totalling £41m. The cuts include reductions to library opening hours, plus permanent closure of King’s Park Plant Nursery. This is the ongoing result of 14 years of austerity cuts to councils’ funding from central Government - their main income source.

Cllr Sara Armstrong successful in £50,000 funding bid for Knyveton Gardens

Since the election, Councillor Sara Armstrong has been working tirelessly to establish whether money from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) can be used to improve the environment of Knyveton Gardens. She was delighted to hear that her application for £50,000 has now been successful.
