Happy International Women's Day: A day to celebrate enormous achievements of women - and also highlight worrying rises in gender-based violence

8 March 2021

Claire Seymour, BCP Green Party's Policing & Crime Spokesperson, has recorded a message for International Women's Day.

Claire says: "Today we celebrate International Women's Day, and recognise the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. There have been huge strides towards gender equality over the years, thanks to some extraordinary people. Now we know education is a game-changer for women and girls across the world, to enable them to feel empowered.

"However, within my role it would be appropriate to highlight the impact the pandemic had on the societal issue of gender-based violence. We have seen an increase of violence in the home, on a global scale, of anything between 20% and 50%. Now it's been acknowledged by the World Health Organisation as a crisis in itself.

"Now there are still challenges to overcome; however this day is a day for us to stop and to recognise those brave women and men who use their strengths to bring about change. Now like a wise woman once said, progress for women is certainly progress for us all."
