As a quiet morning rolled into a sun soaked and serene afternoon, and the people of Purbeck came out to attend the ‘Little Green Festival,’ held on 20th and 21st September, it soon became clear that the environment was still at the top of the list of priorities for locals attending.
Though work is currently halted, festival goers took part in an at times lively discussion with Green Party candidates Alice Rogers and Phil Christopher about a proposed Gas Rig set to be at the California Quarry.
The proposed exploratory rig has encountered up to 60 local objections and sparked serious environmental concerns as it is sited next to the much loved Durlston Country Park and Castle, and within multiple conservation areas and Sites of Scientific Interest.
Situated at The California Barn the festival also played an important role for the aspiring town councillors as the new branch of The Purbeck Green Party was launched.
Speaking at the launch Phil said, ‘people were impressed that we had launched a Purbeck branch and as we walked over to the site and discussed the Rig proposals, people were genuinely interested in our policies regarding the rig and other specific local green issues. They remain really keen to have their voice heard.’
