These improvements are being funded from money allocated to Winton East by BCP Council’s Ward Improvement Fund.

Simon Bull commented: “Green spaces are so important for mental health, for play, for relaxation. Residents tell me how much they value the Rec, the Park (Pine Road), and the gardens (Library and Fampoux). It’s our duty as councillors to continue to make sure the Council looks after them.”

That world could have been ours if not for the courage, the sacrifice, unbreakable resolve of those who stood against it. We remember them: those who fought, those who fell. Those who carried unbearable loss… They paid the price of our freedom.

“They came from every corner of the world, from every walk of life. From every faith, and none. Their strength was not in their sameness, it was in their unity across difference. That unity won the war.

“That unity must guide us stillWe owe them more than remembrance. We owe them vigilance. We must stand against those who seek to divide, deceive and dominate. Their tools may be different today, but their aims are not. In honour of the fallen, and in defence of the future, we must say clearly: never again.”

The cause of these collapses has been weaknesses in Wessex Water's sewer lateral under the road. BCP Council undertook emergency road repairs as short-term resolution. Wessex Water also had to close the road to fix a collapse in the sewer caused by their jetting work to remove a blockage.

Alarming holes [see picture] have appeared in recent months on Acland Road in Winton East. The cause of these collapses has been weaknesses in Wessex Water’s sewer lateral under the road. BCP Council undertook emergency road repairs as short-term resolution. Wessex Water also had to close the road to fix a collapse in the sewer caused by their jetting work to remove a blockage.

Following pressure from the Council, Wessex Water installed new lining to internal pipework in the sewer under Acland Road, from the top of the hill to Charminster Road. Councillor Simon Bull was in touch with Council staff about the problems. As he understands it, Wessex Water’s remedial work should make further holes unlikely.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of Karl Payne, director of The Forge Garage in Winton, Winton East Green councillor Chris Rigby was able to work with him and BCP Council to get them back in place for 2024.

Chris Rigby told the Bournemouth Daily Echo: “I’m pleased to be able to assist Karl in his goal of getting Christmas lights back into Winton.

“Since the cuts last year and the ongoing budget problems, I know BCP Council will be unable to fund them again in the near future, so being able to support a local business with this community initiative is a pleasure.

“I hope we can build from here and make the display even better next year. This is the very definition of community action, and Karl deserves a lot of praise for his work on this.

“I’d also love to speak with anyone from our community in Winton who has other ideas of how we can work together to improve Winton East for everyone.”

The back section of Winton Library Gardens, which had been closed for many years following anti-social behaviour issues, finally reopened with a celebratory ceremony on Saturday 13th July, attended by Winton East‘s Green councillors Simon Bull and Chris Rigby, plus the Chair of BCP Council. Volunteers from BH9 Business Community cut a ribbon to officially open the garden. Library staff provided refreshments, with quizzes and colouring sheets for children.

Chris Rigby commented: “We’ve come a long way in the last five years: first working to get the top part of the gardens open, then partnering with BH9 Business Community and volunteers to tidy up and replant the sunken garden. We directed £15,000 of CIL funding to create the viewing platform, and now finally we’ve had this proper re-opening celebration, welcoming everyone to enjoy this beautiful urban green spot in Winton.

“Now just to get that green fence down to really open up the space!”

Simon Bull commented: “It’s so good to see the gardens finally fully reopened for public use. Thanks to BH9 Business Community for supporting this and getting it done with such amazing work from volunteers.”

The BH9 Business Community volunteers will be continuing their good work, and are keen for more people to join their regular Saturday morning sessions.
