Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole (BCP) Council has announced that all council buildings across the conurbation will be powered by 100% renewable electricity with effect from 1 October.
A council statement said: “In response to the Climate Emergency declared in the summer, BCP Council has taken steps to ensure its own electricity use comes from 100% renewable sources as soon as possible.
“As part of the plans all council buildings including civic offices, the town hall, community centres and libraries will all be powered by green electricity.
“In addition to this the Council also plans to switch the electricity supply of all streetlights in Poole to green electricity bringing this into line with the renewable energy supply already in place for streetlights in Bournemouth and Christchurch. This will mean that from April 2020 all streetlights across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole will be powered using 100% green electricity.”
Councillor Chris Rigby, who co-proposed BCP’s Climate & Ecological Emergency declaration with fellow Green Councillor Simon Bull, said: “I’m really pleased to see BCP Council make the switch to 100% renewable energy across its buildings, and also the commitment to bringing Poole’s streetlighting in line with Bournemouth and Christchurch by being powered with green energy too.
“This simple change is the first step to reducing the carbon emissions of the Council. I look forward to seeing the next steps being taken as we head to net zero carbon by 2030.”
