The Friends of Knyveton & Spencer Gardens were formed last year, with local Green Councillor Sara Armstrong leading on winning a £50,000 grant. Now, all Knyveton Gardens entrances have new signage, a new bin has replaced one damaged by fireworks, and the sensory gardens have had a ‘haircut’ with flowering plants returning. A Nature Walk, a table tennis table and children’s activity items are on the way. There’s more voluntary work going on in the park. Renovations to the community shed continue, alongside general upkeep. Meanwhile Spencer Gardens had a Spring trim.

The wooden play equipment and zip wire at King’s Park, installed in 2016, has sadly been removed due to safety concerns after rotting. Happily, BCP Council has a plan for change. Local Green Councillor Sara Armstrong has received confirmation from staff of a £200,000 investment to completely redesign and rebuild King’s Park play park.

Following regular work by local Green Councillor Sara Armstrong with BCP Council Parking and Enforcement staff, requests from the East Cliff & Springbourne community for parking, access and road safety improvements at Shelbourne Close and Victoria Place are being taken forward for possible funding. However only 20-25 such requests are granted each year in BCP.

Bournemouth North Neighbourhood Inspector Richard Honeywill has retired. He has been replaced by Inspector Scott Janes. Hard-working local Green councillors Simon Bull and Chris Rigby have already held two meetings with Insp Janes. They have discussed the current hot local topics of anti-social behaviour, drug dealing, and nuisance electric motorbikes - particularly all around Wimborne Road.

Hard-working Green Councillor for Queen's Park & Charminster, Alasdair Keddie, has set up a trial Graffiti Removal Scheme in the area. He worked with the Queen’s Park & Charminster Neighbourhood Forum to secure Ward Improvement funding.

Following discussions with residents, East Cliff hoteliers, and a recent beach litter-pick [pictured], local Green councillor Sara Armstrong has written to BCP Council bosses. She highlighted concerns in East Cliff over: disposable BBQs, inadequate facilities, general neglect of public spaces, parking enforcement and management, accessible toilets and beachfront access, and inaction over restoring the long-disused East Cliff lift.

Simon Bull, Green Councillor for Winton East, has raised concerns about closures of local medical centres in the Winton area, forcing local residents to travel further to see a GP. Now the Bournemouth Daily Echo reports that Winton Health Centre on Alma Road, where over 10,000 patients had been registered, may reopen by next year with new NHS funding. Meanwhile, the proposed closure of Banks Medical Centre on Wimborne Road, with transfer of patient registrations to a site in Bearwood, has not taken place.

A Beacon Lighting Ceremony took place on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, outside BCP Civic Centre. Green Councillor Simon Bull spoke: “Imagine a world without victory in Europe - a world where tyranny triumphed, where darkness endured. That world could have been ours - if not for the courage, the sacrifice, unbreakable resolve of those who stood against it. We remember them: those who fought, those who fell. Those who carried unbearable loss… They paid the price of our freedom.

Green councillor for Queen's Park & Charminster, Alasdair Keddie, has been elected as Vice-Chair of BCP’s decision-making councillors for venue licensing applications and reviews. Alasdair commented: “The nighttime economy has been an early priority for me. In Charminster, we’ve seen anti-social behaviour escalating into serious violence, with irresponsibly run venues and breaches of licensing principles. “However, a huge amount has been achieved in the last 18 months."

Queen’s Park & Charminster Neighbourhood Forum has started work on developing a Neighbourhood Plan. Alasdair Keddie says: “A Neighbourhood Plan allows the community to take more control over planning decisions. “We can set local policies saying we want to develop more affordable family homes, and fewer one-bedroom flats and Houses in Multiple Occupation. “It’ll also unlock increases in the levy we can charge developers to fund local community infrastructure.”
