Winton East currently has the lowest level of tree canopy cover - high branches offering shade - of any area in our conurbation. Winton East's Green Councillors Simon Bull and Chris Rigby have secured over £21,000, mostly Community Infrastructure funds [levied from developers], for more street trees in Winton.

While doing his regular rounds of litter-picking and reporting fly-tipping for BCP Council clearance, Councillor Alasdair Keddie (Queen's Park & Charminster) has searched through fly-tipped waste, looking for evidence of names and addresses. On seven separate occasions he has found such evidence. He has passed each on to BCP Council’s Enforcement Team, who have opened actions.

Following regular work by local Green Councillor Sara Armstrong with BCP Council Parking and Enforcement staff, requests from the East Cliff & Springbourne community for parking, access and road safety improvements at Shelbourne Close and Victoria Place are being taken forward for possible funding. However only 20-25 such requests are granted each year in BCP.

Hard-working Green Councillor for Queen's Park & Charminster, Alasdair Keddie, has set up a trial Graffiti Removal Scheme in the area. He worked with the Queen’s Park & Charminster Neighbourhood Forum to secure Ward Improvement funding.

Green councillor for Queen's Park & Charminster, Alasdair Keddie, has been elected as Vice-Chair of BCP’s decision-making councillors for venue licensing applications and reviews. Alasdair commented: “The nighttime economy has been an early priority for me. In Charminster, we’ve seen anti-social behaviour escalating into serious violence, with irresponsibly run venues and breaches of licensing principles. “However, a huge amount has been achieved in the last 18 months."

Queen’s Park & Charminster Neighbourhood Forum has started work on developing a Neighbourhood Plan. Alasdair Keddie says: “A Neighbourhood Plan allows the community to take more control over planning decisions. “We can set local policies saying we want to develop more affordable family homes, and fewer one-bedroom flats and Houses in Multiple Occupation. “It’ll also unlock increases in the levy we can charge developers to fund local community infrastructure.”

On Charminster Road: The old rusty bins are being replaced with new multi-use bins. Wonky planter poles are being removed, but serviceable ones will remain. Tired, graffitied street signs are being replaced. A new bike rack will be installed outside Cecil Court. A new pavement cleaning machine is scheduled, to remove chewing gum and debris from the pavements.

Alarming holes have appeared in recent months on Acland Road in Winton East. The cause of these collapses has been weaknesses in Wessex Water's sewer lateral under the road. BCP Council undertook emergency road repairs as short-term resolution. Wessex Water also had to close the road to fix a collapse in the sewer caused by their jetting work to remove a blockage.

Now that there is a new permanent Headteacher in place at St Luke's School in Winton East, Green Councillor Chris Rigby is once again helping with the development of a school travel plan. Chris has been speaking to Mr Godfrey and they are working with BCP's Sustainable Travel team. The first aim is to find ways to reduce the traffic congestion around the school at dropoff/pickup times. Chris added: "Once that's done, we can look at other schemes to assist the school, and try to make it safer for the kids getting there in the mornings."
